Hearth Rake

Tools

Forge, anvil, hammer, tongs, vise, punch/drill (optional)

Materials

  • Mild steel round: 10–12 mm, 900–1100 mm

  • Mild steel flat: 20 x 6 mm, 120 mm (for rake head)

Steps

  1. Make handle loop (like the poker).

  2. Forge shaft straight and clean.

  3. Prepare rake head: On the flat bar, mark 3–5 teeth.

  4. Cut/forge teeth: Hot cut (if capable) or cut cold later and dress.

  5. Attach: Punch and rivet, or drill and bolt (beginner-friendly), or weld if available.

  6. Bend rake neck: Add a slight dog-leg so teeth sit flat when used.
